Chapter VIII · The Taproot
Inspired by Time
It smells the way time does.
Time teaches patience: you watch things arrive, burn bright and go, and slowly you learn which things stay. I composed the taproot, the deepest chapter of the tree, so you live the passage of time on your own skin. Saffron, cardamom and juniper arrive bright and leave, the way the loud things do. Rose de Mai and osmanthus bloom and slowly fade, the way the beautiful things do. What remains is suede leather, styrax smoke, frankincense and sandalwood. The leather and the smoke hold on while everything else passes.
