Autumn Fragrance: The Chapters That Belong to the Turning Year

What actually changes when it gets cold

Fragrance needs warmth to lift. Molecules leave the skin faster in heat and slower in cold, which is why the same bottle that filled a room in July seems to disappear in October.

Nothing has changed about the perfume. The air has changed. Cold, dry air holds less, carries less, and pulls moisture out of the skin the fragrance is clinging to.

Two consequences follow, and they are the whole of autumn wearing. Light materials stop reaching anyone. Heavy materials, which are usually too much in summer, finally read the way they were composed to read.

The transition weeks

September and early October are the most interesting weeks of the fragrance year, because both halves of the tree work.

Néroli de Nuit, the Blossom. Orange blossom as it smells after dark, deeper and sweeter, steadied by black tea and closed with amberwood. It is the chapter built for exactly this light: still floral, already warm.

Rosée Blanche, the Climbing Rose. White rose folded into vanilla cream. In summer it is a soft luminous thing. In autumn the vanilla comes forward and it becomes something you lean into.

When it really turns

By November the crown of the tree stops carrying and the roots take over.

Chérie Oud, the Trunk. Madagascar vanilla, Venezuelan tonka and a soft amber oud. The gentlest doorway into the dark half of the collection, and the single most wearable thing in the house between October and February. Knitwear, firesides, long dinners.

Impériale Oud, the First Root. A full Turkish rose over velvet orris with genuine Oud Assafi drawing a shadow underneath. Evening formality with a pulse in it.

What still works from the crown

Do not put the bright chapters away. Put them on earlier.

Hayal, the Crown. Lemon and blood orange into black tea and white musk. On a warm autumn afternoon it is still the best thing in the house for a morning, an office, or a first meeting, and the musk in its base holds far better in cold air than the citrus at the top suggests.

Paradis de Bleu, the Leaves. Rain on the Italian coast. It reads as summer in July and as clean weather in October, which is a different and quieter pleasure.

How to wear it in the turning year

• Moisturise first. Cold air dries skin and dry skin sheds fragrance. An unscented moisturiser a few minutes before can nearly double what you get.
• Add one spray, not three. The instinct in cold weather is to overcompensate. Two to four sprays is still the answer. The trail will find its warmth from your body, not from the bottle.
• Use the coat. A light pass on a scarf or the inside of a lapel holds for days and survives the walk to the door in a way skin does not.
• Spray before you dress, not after. Autumn wardrobes are layered, and a fragrance applied over a jumper never reaches the skin that would have developed it.

The honest way to choose

Skin rewrites every formula, and it rewrites them differently in October than it did in June. The same bottle you tested in a warm shop will behave like a different fragrance on a cold morning.
