The honest answer

Musk does not smell like one thing. It smells like warmth.

Ask ten people to describe it and you will get skin, clean laundry, powder, cashmere, the inside of a coat, the back of someone's neck. All ten answers are correct. Musk is the note that sits closest to the body, and what it does best is make a fragrance smell as though it is coming from a person rather than from a bottle.

If you want one sentence: musk smells like skin at its best. Soft, warm, faintly sweet, slightly powdered, and impossible to point at.

Why it is so hard to name

Most notes announce themselves. Lemon is lemon. Rose is rose. Musk works differently.

It is a large family of molecules, most of them heavy and slow to evaporate, which is why they are still there long after the bright things have gone. They also sit right at the edge of what the nose can detect. A meaningful share of people cannot smell certain musks at all, and almost everyone goes briefly nose blind to them within minutes of putting them on.

Every musk in every fragrance you can buy today is made in a laboratory, and the laboratory versions are better in every way that matters: cleaner, more stable, more precisely tuned, and available in far more shades than the original ever offered. A perfumer today can choose between dozens of musks the way a painter chooses between whites.

Where we cannot verify an origin, we stay silent. On musk we can be completely clear. It is synthetic, it is meant to be, and that is a good thing.

Why the house is called what it is

Musk de Lumière. Musk of light.

Musk is what remains when everything else has evaporated. Light is what makes a thing visible. The name is a description of an intention: to compose fragrances that are still there in the long after, and that make the wearer more visible rather than the perfume.
