Pink pepper, ginger, and nutmeg open warm and faintly spiced over a heart of black tea, neroli, and jasmine. Underneath, frankincense, labdanum, and cistus build the soft resinous haze the whole thing rests on — guaiacwood and musks holding it close, like warmth left in a room. Less a single note than a mood that will not quite resolve.

Bulgarian rose absolute opens full and unhurried over violet-tinged orris and a sweet amber of vanilla and ethyl maltol. Beneath it, cypriol and castoreum draw a quiet shadow — a touch of leather, a touch of resin — so the flower reads rich rather than pretty. Patchouli and ambroxan carry it into the long evening.

Tunisian neroli and orange blossom absolute open over Calabrian bergamot and petitgrain — the green, honeyed bitterness of the bitter-orange tree, top to root. Jasmine sambac fills the heart; then musks, ambroxan, and a quiet smoke of guaiac and cedar pull it down into evening. The brightest of flowers, kept till after dark.

Calabrian bergamot and a clean salt-air accord break over a heart of muguet and iris, cool and transparent. Beneath, ambroxan, vetiver, and a thread of moss give it the wet-stone gravity that keeps it from drifting away. Bergamot and a cool green magnolia open clean as cold water over a heart of rose and powdered iris. It looks quiet — and then it fills the room. A dense base of white musks, ambroxan, and ambrocenide carries it far and holds it for hours: the radiance of a white floral with the projection of something far heavier underneath.

Smoke drawn slow over wood.

A composition built on the deep resins of the East — Somali frankincense, gurjun balsam, and cypriol laid over Haitian amyris and patchouli, with a thread of saffron and suede running through the smoke. Sandalwood and ambroxan hold it close to the skin; a breath of Rose de Mai and osmanthus keeps the darkness from closing entirely.

It does not announce itself. It stays — on a collar, in a room — long after you have gone.
