Oud for Beginners: How to Choose a Gentle First Oud Perfume

Start soft, know what is in the bottle, and let your skin take its time.

A first oud does not have to be a shock. Start soft, know what is in the bottle, and give it time on skin.

I

What is a good oud perfume for beginners?

One where the oud is present but softened, wrapped in vanilla, amber or rose, so its warmth arrives before its wildness. At Musk de Lumière that is Chérie Oud, $145.

Chérie Oud sets vanilla, tonka and benzoin over a soft amber oud, and it is woody rather than smoky. A first oud should teach you the note, not test you.

In Impériale Oud, Bulgarian rose softens natural Oud Assafi. The second step.

II

What does oud smell like the first time?

Warm, dark, woody and resinous, often with a leathery or faintly animal edge in the first minutes that softens as it settles.

The full answer, region by region, is in the guide to how oud smells. For a beginner, two things matter. The opening is not the fragrance. And a softened oud lets you meet the warmth before the wild edge.

III

Does oud smell like smoke?

Not on its own. Natural oud is woody, resinous and leathery and can carry a smoky edge, but the heavy smoke in many oud perfumes comes from the materials around it.

Incense notes, styrax, birch tar and leather accords are common sources. Oud wood is also burned as incense across the Middle East, and that fragrant smoke is part of why many people expect it. In this house Chérie Oud is woody rather than smoky. Royale Oud is the smoky one: styrax smoke and Somali frankincense over suede leather.

Raw agarwood, the wood natural oud is distilled from. An accord is composed instead.

IV

What kinds of oud are used in perfume?

Three: natural oud oil, refined modern ouds and oud accords. Each can be well made. What matters is that a house says which one it uses.

  • Natural oud oil. Distilled from agarwood, the resin filled heartwood of the Aquilaria tree. The most complex form and the most costly. It can open with a wild, animal edge before it settles into warm, sweet wood.
  • Refined modern ouds. Oud materials cleaned of the farmyard opening, keeping the warm, resinous heart. Smoother and more even from the first minute.
  • Oud accords. Compositions of woods, resins, leather notes and modern molecules, built to evoke oud without the oil itself. Nothing in an accord is dishonest, as long as the label says so.

The house prints its ladder. Royale Oud is built on an oud accord. Chérie Oud is built on a soft amber oud. Impériale Oud and Sultanat Oud carry natural Oud Assafi, wild harvested in Sylhet, Bangladesh.

All four ouds, Chérie Oud to Royale Oud, in the order of the tree.

V

Which oud should a beginner try first?

Begin with Chérie Oud, then step down the ladder to Impériale Oud, Sultanat Oud and Royale Oud. The entry point is Chérie Oud, not Sultanat Oud.

Step Fragrance Oud Character 50 ml
1 Chérie Oud A soft amber oud Vanilla, tonka and benzoin. Woody rather than smoky $145
2 Impériale Oud Natural Oud Assafi Bulgarian rose oil softens the oud, with orris and violet $165
3 Sultanat Oud Natural Oud Assafi Lavender, apple, cinnamon and cardamom, drying down powdered. The longest lasting of the house $165
4 Royale Oud An oud accord Leather, saffron and smoke. The deepest of the house $185

Step one · Chérie Oud · $145

The gentle way into oud. Calabrian bergamot and Bulgarian lavender open it. Madagascar vanilla, Venezuelan tonka bean and Siam benzoin form the heart, over a soft amber oud with Indonesian patchouli, guaiac wood and Haitian amyris. The oud arrives as warmth rather than as a challenge.

Step two · Impériale Oud · $165

The first natural oud on the ladder. Pink pepper and Manila elemi open it. Bulgarian rose oil, velvet orris and violet sit over Oud Assafi, wild harvested in Sylhet, Bangladesh, with Indonesian patchouli. The rose softens the oud and gives it a face. This is the step from a softened oud to natural oud. More in rose and oud perfume.

Step three · Sultanat Oud · $165

Natural Oud Assafi at the center, with rosewood. French lavender, crisp apple, cinnamon and Guatemalan cardamom open it. Amberwood, cashmere wood, Australian sandalwood and a powdery musk close it, drying down creamy and powdered. Here the oud stands at the heart rather than beneath a rose, and this is the longest lasting fragrance of the house. Come to it once Impériale Oud feels familiar.

Step four · Royale Oud · $185

The deepest fragrance of the house. Saffron, Guatemalan cardamom and juniper berry open onto rose de Mai, Chinese osmanthus and an oud accord, over suede leather, Somali frankincense, styrax smoke, Australian sandalwood and patchouli. Leather and smoke lead. It comes last because it is the deepest, not because of its oud, which is an accord.

To own the first step and a natural oud together, Le Tronc et la Racine pairs Chérie Oud and Sultanat Oud, two 50 ml bottles in two gift boxes with the Discovery Set, for $310.

VI

Is there real oud under $200?

Yes. Impériale Oud and Sultanat Oud each carry natural Oud Assafi, wild harvested in Sylhet, Bangladesh, and each is $165 for 50 ml.

Natural oud is among the costliest materials in perfumery, so price alone proves little either way. What tells you more is whether a house names its oud and where it comes from. The house sets out both in Oud Assafi, the wild oud of Sylhet.

VII

How do you test an oud perfume on skin?

One spray on the inner wrist, then wait. Judge it after it has settled, not in the first minutes.

  • Skin, not paper. A paper strip shows the opening and none of the warmth that follows.
  • One spray. Oud does not need help. Do not rub; friction hurries the top notes away.
  • Give it time. Smell it after a few minutes, after the first hour and in the evening. Decide in the evening.
  • One oud a day. Two ouds on two wrists blur into one.
  • Cool air. Autumn, winter and evenings let oud unfold slowly. In heat it can feel heavy.
