The pairing
Rose and Oud Perfume: What It Is and How to Choose the Best One
Why a flower and a wounded wood belong together, and how to choose the balance that suits you.
Rose and oud is a long standing pairing in Middle Eastern perfumery and a familiar one in niche fragrance today. Here is what each brings, what to look for, and how this house answers the question.
I
What is a rose oud perfume?
A rose oud perfume pairs rose, usually at the heart, with oud, the resinous wood that anchors the base. Rose oud, oud rose and rose and oud all name the same idea.
Rose brings light and lift, the part you recognize at once. Oud brings depth: dark wood, leather and resin settling into amber sweetness. It is the oil distilled from agarwood, the resin filled heartwood an Aquilaria tree forms after it is wounded. In a well made rose oud you smell both at once, the flower in front and the wood beneath, and neither covers the other. For oud on its own, read how oud smells.
Bulgarian rose oil over Oud Assafi: the flower in front, the wood beneath.
II
Why are rose and oud paired?
Because each supplies what the other lacks. Rose is bright and rises quickly. Oud is dark and among the slowest materials in perfumery to evaporate.
The rose gives the oud a face. The oud gives the rose a shadow. Rose softens the sharper edges of oud, and oud holds rose on the skin long after a rose alone would have faded.
In Middle Eastern perfumery the pairing is long standing, and both materials are worn by men and women alike. Western houses took it up more recently.
III
Is rose oud for women or for men?
Both. The idea that oud belongs to men and rose to women is a habit of Western marketing, not of the cultures that have long worn them together.
Choose by balance rather than by gender: rose forward if you want the flower to lead, oud forward if you want the wood. Every fragrance of this house is unisex, its rose ouds included.

IV
How do you choose a rose and oud perfume?
Ask five questions. Is the oud natural or an accord? Which rose is it? Which of the two leads? How does it last? When will you wear it?
- Natural oud or an oud accord. Natural oud is an oil distilled from agarwood. An oud accord is a composition of woods, resins and modern molecules built to evoke it. Both can be beautiful. A house should say which it uses and, for natural oud, where it comes from. If a label says only oud, ask.
- Which rose. Rose oil, also called rose otto, is distilled from the petals and reads fresh, bright and faintly spicy. Rose absolute is extracted with solvents and reads deeper and more honeyed. Bulgaria is among the best known sources of rose oil, distilled from the damask rose. More on the materials page for rose.
- Which one leads. In a rose forward perfume the flower leads and the oud is a shadow beneath it. In an oud forward one the wood leads and the rose glows inside it. For a first rose oud, rose forward is the easier door, and oud for beginners sets out the rest of the way in.
- How it lasts. Expect the rose to soften first and the woods to stay. Judge it in the evening, not in the first minutes. More in how long a fragrance should last.
- The season. Rose oud is at its best in cool air: autumn, winter, evenings. In heat, one spray is enough. More in what to wear when the cold arrives.

Which rose and oud perfume should you choose?
Choose by which should lead. Impériale Oud puts rose in front of natural oud. Royale Oud sets rose inside leather and smoke. Roseé Blanche keeps the rose and leaves out the oud.
| Fragrance | The rose | The oud | What leads | 50 ml |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Impériale Oud | Bulgarian rose oil, with orris and violet | Natural Oud Assafi, wild harvested in Sylhet, Bangladesh | The rose | $165 |
| Royale Oud | Rose de Mai, with osmanthus | An oud accord | Leather, saffron and smoke | $185 |
| Roseé Blanche | Bulgarian rose oil and a rose absolute blend | None | The rose, with vanilla | $145 |
Impériale Oud · rose in front of natural oud · $165
The rose and oud of the house. Pink pepper and Manila elemi open it. Bulgarian rose oil, velvet orris and violet form the heart. Beneath them runs natural Oud Assafi, wild harvested in Sylhet, Bangladesh, with Indonesian patchouli. The rose leads; the oud is the shadow beneath the flower. The oil itself is described in Oud Assafi, the wild oud of Sylhet.
Royale Oud · rose inside leather and smoke · $185
The deepest fragrance of the house. Saffron, Guatemalan cardamom and juniper berry open onto rose de Mai and Chinese osmanthus, set on an oud accord. Suede leather, Somali frankincense, styrax smoke, Australian sandalwood and patchouli form the base. Here the rose is a glow inside the leather, not the face of the fragrance. Like time, it changes on the skin over the hours.
Roseé Blanche · the rose without the oud · $145
For a rose without oud. Calabrian bergamot, white peach and lychee open onto Bulgarian rose oil, a rose absolute blend, peony and magnolia, over Madagascar vanilla, amberwood and white musk. The most chosen fragrance of the house: soft and close at first, then a long trail.
The pair · both roses
La Rose, deux fois, $310, holds Roseé Blanche and Impériale Oud, two 50 ml bottles in two gift boxes, with the Discovery Set: the white rose for the day, the rose and oud for the evening. The house follows one rose from the root of its tree to the crown in The Rose That Climbs.
